WINGS RE-SIGN FRK
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday re-signed forward Martin Frk to a one-year contract.
Frk, 23, was the Grand Rapids Griffins’ leading goal scorer in 2016-17 as he matched his career-high with 27 tallies while ranking fourth on the club with a career-best 50 points in 65 games. The 6-foot, 200-pound winger paced the American Hockey League with 232 shots, tied for seventh in goals and tied for fifth in power play goals. His 12 power play markers established a career high as, combined with 11 during the 2015-16 campaign, he became only the second player in Grand Rapids history with consecutive seasons of double-digit power play goal totals.
Frk potted the game-winning goal in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals against Syracuse and concluded the postseason sixth on the team in scoring with 15 points (5-10—15) to go along with 20 penalty minutes in 16 contests.
A native of Pelhrimov, Czech Republic, Frk became the 156th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL when he debuted with the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 18, 2016, after being claimed off waivers. Frk skated in two games with the Hurricanes and averaged 8:20 of ice time before Detroit re-claimed him off waivers on Nov. 1.
Detroit’s first choice, 49th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Frk has appeared in 214 career contests with the Griffins since 2013-14, compiling 118 points (63-55—118) and 185 PIM while adding 21 points (6-15—21) and 22 PIM in 26 Calder Cup Playoff games. Frk also skated in 44 regular season games with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye from 2013-15 and tallied 51 points (28-23—51).
Prior to turning pro, Frk racked up 163 points (73-90—163) in 152 games with Halifax (QMJHL) from 2010-13 and helped the Mooseheads win both the QMJHL President Cup and the CHL Memorial Cup during his final season with the club in 2012-13.
The Griffins will raise their 2017 Calder Cup championship banner and begin the defense of their title on Friday, Oct. 6 at Van Andel Arena against Manitoba when the puck drops on the 2017-18 season with Opening Night presented by Huntington Bank.
Single-game tickets will go on sale to the public on Sept. 8. Fans can secure their full-season, select-season or group ticket packages by calling (616) 774-4585 ext. 2 or visit griffinshockey.com for more information.
