RISE AND SHINE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday signed forward Dominik Shine to an amateur tryout for the remainder of this season and to a standard player’s contract for 2017-18.
Shine, 23, played the last four seasons at Northern Michigan University (WCHA), where he tallied 97 points (48-49—97) and 185 penalty minutes in 131 games and served as a two-time alternate captain.
During his senior year, Shine paced the conference with 20 goals in 33 contests en route to his second-straight 30-point season and was named to the All-WCHA Third Team. Shine also captured the WCHA’s Offensive Player of the Week award twice and was the conference’s Player of the Month in January. He logged two hat tricks, and his 20 goals marked the most by a Wildcat in a season since 2007-08.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward earned All-WCHA Second Team accolades during his junior campaign that saw him lead NMU in goals and finish second in points (15-15—30).
A native of Pinckney, Mich., Shine played four seasons for the USHL’s Lincoln Stars from 2009-13 and served as captain during his final two years. He totaled 134 career points (64-70—134) and 503 PIM in 188 regular season contests while chipping in five points (2-3—5) and 22 PIM in 15 postseason appearances. Shine finished second on the Stars with 26 goals in 2012-13 while producing a career-best 45 points.
The Central Division-leading Griffins will host second-place Chicago on Friday night at 7 p.m.
