TWO ENTER, TWO EXIT
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday signed left wing Landon Novotney (nuh-VAWT-nee) to an amateur tryout, released defenseman Russ Moyer, welcomed back center Darren Helm on assignment from the Detroit Red Wings, and announced that goaltender Jimmy Howard has been recalled by the NHL club.
Novotney, 20, comes to the Griffins after finishing his freshman season at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (CCHA), where he led the Nanooks with 16 goals and ranked third with 25 points in 35 games. The Edmonton, Alberta, native could make his professional debut Wednesday when Grand Rapids hosts the Lake Erie Monsters at 7 p.m.
Moyer, 25, went scoreless in two games with the Griffins after signing a pro tryout on Feb. 23 but missed the last 12 games due to an injury. He returns to the IHL’s Muskegon Fury.
Helm, 21, has appeared in six NHL contests over two stints with the Wings, averaging 5:37 of ice time with two penalty minutes. He currently leads Griffins rookies in scoring with 23 points (11-12—23) through 59 games.
Howard, who will turn 24 on Wednesday, received his fourth call-up of the campaign and shows a 0-2-0 record, a 2.13 goals against average and a 0.926 save percentage in four games with Detroit this season. He will be available on Tuesday when Detroit visits St. Louis at 8:30 p.m. EDT. In 49 games with the Griffins, Howard owns a 19-25-2 mark with a 2.78 GAA and a 0.910 save percentage.
