TRAINING CAMP STARTS FRIDAY
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League will commence their tenth annual training camp this Friday, Sept. 23 at Griffs IceHouse at Belknap Park (30 Coldbrook NE). Approximately 30 players will begin preparations for the Griffins fourth season as the primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, under the guidance of head coach Greg Ireland and new assistant coach Jim Paek.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will feature identical schedules, with split-squad practices at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. scrimmage. All training camp sessions at Griffs IceHouse are open to the public.
Most of the players expected to comprise Grand Rapids 2005-06 roster will still be with the Red Wings as camp opens. Fifteen players who wore the Griffins crest last season are currently in Detroits camp, including goaltenders Joey MacDonald and Drew MacIntyre; defensemen Greg Amadio, Bryan Helmer, Brett Lebda and Derek Meech; and forwards Darryl Bootland, Matt Ellis, Eric Himelfarb, Jiri Hudler, Todd Jackson, Tomas Kopecky, Eric Manlow and Blake Sloan.
Following 10 a.m. practices next Monday and Tuesday, Grand Rapids will begin its preseason slate with a pair of road games. On Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Griffins will visit the Milwaukee Admirals for an 8 p.m. EDT faceoff at the Mullett Ice Center in Hartland, Wisc. Theyll head south the following night to take on the Chicago Wolves in an 8 p.m. EDT start at the West Meadows Ice Arena in Rolling Meadows, Ill. Tickets for both games will be available at the door on game night ($10 in Milwaukee, $6 in Chicago).
The Griffins will complete their docket by welcoming the Cleveland Barons to the Georgetown Ice Arena in Hudsonville on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door, priced at $5 for adults and $3 for children under 18.
Grand Rapids will kick off its tenth season at Van Andel Arena on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. versus the Milwaukee Admirals. 10th Anniversary Opening Night presented by Comcast will feature performances by Claude, The Happy Trumpeter and intermission entertainment by the Gentleman Jugglers. The first 3,000 fans will receive a 10th Anniversary commemorative poster.
