TOOTOO AND OUELLET ARRIVE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday assigned right wing Jordin Tootoo and defenseman Xavier Ouellet to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Originally the Nashville Predators’ sixth selection (98th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Tootoo, 30, has skated in 536 regular season games over 10 NHL seasons, posting 133 points (49-84—133) and 808 penalty minutes. The Churchill, Manitoba, native has also played in 40 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, notching 10 points (3-7—10) and 65 PIM.

The 5-foot-9, 199-pound right wing signed as a free agent with the Wings on July 1, 2012, and has since produced eight points (3-5—8) and 83 PIM in 50 games for the team, including eight scoreless appearances this season. Now in his 11th professional year, Tootoo last played in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals during the 2005-06 season. He has 49 points (23-26—49) and 399 PIM in 100 career AHL games.

Ouellet, 20, made his NHL debut with Detroit during the team’s 1-0 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 21, becoming the 134th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman has appeared in three games with Detroit, registering 56 shifts and a total ice time of 41:56. The Bayonne, France, native has also produced three points (0-3—3), 19 shots on goal and two PIM in 12 games with Grand Rapids this season.

Tootoo is expected to make his Griffins debut, and Ouellet his return, when the team hosts the Rockford IceHogs tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Griffins (9-3-1-1) will then travel to Allstate Arena to battle the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at 8 p.m.
