SMITH RECALLED TO DETROIT
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday recalled defenseman Brendan Smith from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Smith, 22, has appeared in seven games with the Griffins this season, recording two assists and 20 penalty minutes. The Mimico, Ontario, native was named to the 2010-11 AHL All-Rookie team after becoming the first rookie defenseman in franchise history to be selected for the AHL All-Star Game.
Smith is expected to serve the fourth game of his five-game NHL suspension tonight when the Red Wings host the Calgary Flames at 7:30 p.m. He was handed the suspension after an incident in a Sept. 28 NHL preseason game.
The Griffins will be in action again on Saturday at 7 p.m. in their first-ever meeting with the Charlotte Checkers at Van Andel Arena. Tickets are still available at griffinshockey.com.
