Scotty and Stanley

Mar 17, 2005
In the 112-year history of the Stanley Cup, no individual has earned the honor of hoisting hockey’s holy grail more than the legendary Scotty Bowman. Both of these icons – not to mention the Hanson Brothers – will pay a visit to Van Andel Arena during the season’s final month.

March 18 - Tribute to "Slap Shot" (Edmonton Road Runners)

Break out the foil and call Dickie Dunn - it's time to celebrate the greatest hockey movie of all time! The Griffins will pay homage to "Slap Shot," the 1977 movie that starred Paul Newman and spawned the Hanson Brothers.

Hockey's notorious siblings will sign autographs before the game, and the Griffins' commemorative Charlestown Chiefs sweaters will be auctioned to the public afterwards to benefit the ALS Association West Michigan Chapter.

March 20 - The Stanley Cup / Griff's Carnival (Edmonton Road Runners)

Sure, NHL players get the chance to cash huge paychecks, drive expensive cars and live the life of luxury. But thanks to the Griffins, you can have the privilege of doing something none of them can this season - touch the Stanley Cup.

The coveted silver chalice will be on display in the arena banquet room from 3 p.m. until the conclusion of the game against Edmonton, whose NHL parent claimed the trophy five times from 1984-90.

In addition, the annual Griff's Carnival will feature games on the concourse for children of all ages.

March 29 - Wedding on Ice (Cleveland Barons)

Thin ice may make a less-than-ideal foundation for a marriage, but it's the perfect stage for a wedding, at least in the eyes of one couple.

Steve Wegleitner and Jodie Larson of Zimmerman, Minn., were chosen through the Griffins’ “Wedding on Ice” contest to get married during the first intermission of the Griffins’ game against the Barons.

You are invited to join Mayor George Heartwell and thousands of Grand Rapidians in the hockey-flavored celebration! No need to RSVP.

April 1 - Night of Thunder (Utah Grizzlies)

No need to be alarmed - the title refers not to the aromatic consequences of poor culinary choices, but to the Harley Davidson riders who will roar in for the game against the Grizzlies.

All motorcycles will receive free parking in the Wild Boar Harley Davidson Bike Corral behind the arena. New bikes will be on display in the lobby, and an indoor "Poker Walk" will take place on the concourse.

Given the date on the calendar, who knows what else may be in store.

April 2 - Who Let the Dogs Out? (Utah Grizzlies)

Looking to un-leash some love? The Griffins and local animal shelters are teaming up to find homes for some deserving dogs. Should you find a new best friend on the concourse, you can begin the adoption process on the Spot.

The first 1,500 fans will receive a Griffins dog dish, providing your beloved pooch a much better option than the toilet bowl.

April 16 - Scotty Bowman / Grand Finale presented by West Michigan Chrysler Jeep Dealers (San Antonio Rampage)

The Griffins have literally saved "the best" for last. Due to a scheduling conflict, the appearance by Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman originally scheduled for April 15 has been moved back one day, coinciding with the regular season Grand Finale!

A 10-time Stanley Cup champion and the winningest coach in NHL history, Bowman will sign autographs for fans before the game, in the final installment of the Hockeytown Heroes series.

In gratitude for another great season of Griffins hockey, fans will win prizes from Chrysler Jeep and other Griffins sponsors throughout the night.
