RED WINGS RE-SIGN CALLAHAN
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday re-signed forward Mitch Callahan to a one-year contract.
Callahan, 24, appeared in 62 regular season games with the Griffins during the 2015-16 season and ranked eighth on the team in points (19-13—32), fourth in goals (19) and second in penalty minutes (94). The 6-foot, 195-pound winger added two points (0-2—2) in nine Calder Cup Playoff contests.
A native of Whittier, Calif., Callahan joined the Griffins in 2011-12 and has compiled 143 points (78-65—143) and 365 PIM in 299 regular season games. Should he appear in one more contest, he will become the eighth player in franchise history to play in 300 or more games. Callahan’s 78 career goals also tie for fourth in the club’s record book.
Skating in 41 career Calder Cup Playoff games, Callahan has contributed 18 points (7-11—18) and helped the Griffins capture the 2013 Calder Cup. He ranks among the franchise’s all-time playoff leaders with 48 PIM (6th) and 41 games played (T7th).
Detroit’s sixth choice (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Callahan has played in one game with the Red Wings, debuting March 25, 2014 at Columbus.
Prior to turning professional, Callahan played for Kelowna (WHL) from 2008-11, totaling 128 points (57-71—128) and 440 PIM in 204 games.
The Griffins will begin the home portion of their 2016-17 season with Opening Night presented by Huntington Bank on Friday, Oct. 14 at Van Andel Arena. Additional home dates confirmed by the American Hockey League include Dec. 31, Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Feb. 4 and Feb. 25.
