RED WINGS ACQUIRE OWENS FOR NEWBURY

Mar 03, 2010

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday acquired left wing Jordan Owens from the New York Rangers in exchange for center Kris Newbury.

Owens, 23, has played the majority of his three professional seasons with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, totaling 70 points (25-45—70) and 163 penalty minutes in 160 games. He has compiled 19 points (6-13—19), 53 PIM and a team-high plus-eight rating in 50 games for Hartford this season.

The Toronto native signed a free agent contract with the Rangers on May 5, 2009, after ranking among the Wolf Pack’s leaders with 25 assists (5th) and a plus-17 rating (4th) in 2008-09.

Owens, who was a teammate of current Griffin Patrick Rissmiller last season, is a former participant in both the OHL and ECHL all-star games, having finished second in the ECHL’s fastest-skater event at that league’s 2007-08 all-star skills competition.

Assigned to Grand Rapids following the trade, Owens is expected to make his Griffins debut on Thursday when they visit the Peoria Rivermen at 8 p.m. EST.

The 28-year-old Newbury, a fourth-round pick of San Jose in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, spent his first six pro seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization before signing with the Red Wings last summer. In 52 games with the Griffins this season, he posted 33 points (11-22—33), a team-high 144 PIM and a minus-13 rating. Newbury also saw action in four games for Detroit, contributing one goal and four PIM.
