OUELLET BACK TO DETROIT
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Ouellet, 20, made his NHL debut with Detroit during the team’s 1-0 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, becoming the 134th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman, who had 23 shifts and a total ice time of 17:15 with Detroit, has also posted two points (0-2—2) in five games with Grand Rapids this season.
Prior to joining the Griffins, the rookie defenseman was a part of the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, tallying 101 points (31-70—101) from 2011-13. Ouellet also represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, posting three points (1-2—3) in six games. Drafted by Detroit in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Ouellet served as a “black ace” with Grand Rapids for the first three rounds of the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Ouellet will be available to play tonight when the Wings battle the Ottawa Senators at 7:30 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena.
The Griffins (2-1-1-1) will host the Charlotte Checkers this Friday at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to take on the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT and the Iowa Wild on Sunday at 6:05 p.m EDT.
