NO HOLE IN NOLAN
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Nolan Schaefer made 28 saves, Shane Joseph scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Cleveland Barons (13-12-1-2) to a 2-0 blanking of the Grand Rapids Griffins (18-9-1-0) on Saturday night at Van Andel Arena.
Still weary from a full day of traveling from Salt Lake City, the Griffins arrived in Grand Rapids on Saturday afternoon.
Cleveland opened the scoring shortly after a Grand Rapids power play expired. Joseph stepped out of the penalty box and received a pass from Aaron Gill. Joseph promptly found Josh Prudden streaking through the neutral zone. Prudden was hooked down by a Griffins defender and from his belly, he managed to beat Joey MacDonald at 11:20 of the first period.
The game remained 1-0 until late in the third period when a giveaway in the Griffins defensive zone led to the Barons second goal. Ryane Clowe capitalized on the giveaway and slid a pass across the crease to Joseph who tapped it into the open side of the net with 2:55 remaining in regulation.
MacDonald made 32 saves in a losing effort.
The Griffins have a chance to avenge this loss on Wednesday at Gund Arena at 7 p.m.
