NEWBURY GOES TO DETROIT

Dec 14, 2009

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Monday recalled center Kris Newbury from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

After tying his season high with three points (1-2—3) on Sunday against his former Toronto Marlies teammates, the 27-year-old Newbury ranks among the Griffins’ leaders with seven goals (T4th), 12 assists (T1st), 19 points (T1st) and 95 penalty minutes (1st) through 27 games. His seven-game assist streak from Oct. 25-Nov. 13 continues to stand as the AHL’s longest this season.

A native of Brampton, Ontario, Newbury makes his return to the NHL after registering six points (3-3—6) and 60 PIM in 44 contests with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2006-09.

Newbury is expected to become the 108th former Griffin to play in the NHL and make his Red Wings debut tonight when Detroit hosts the Phoenix Coyotes at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Detroit.
