MOTOR CITY MEECH
Galvin Signed to Standard Player’s Contract
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday recalled defenseman Derek Meech from the Grand Rapids Griffins. In addition, the Griffins today signed defenseman Tom Galvin to a standard player’s contract.
An alternate captain in his third campaign with Grand Rapids, Meech shows three assists and a plus-four rating in 24 contests this season, and he has totaled 37 points (10-27—37) in 181 career games as a Griffin. Durability has been his hallmark, as the 22 year old has missed just three games (two to injury, one to suspension) during his pro career.
Following his first regular season call-up to Detroit, Meech will be available to play for the Red Wings tonight when they host the St. Louis Blues at 7:30 p.m. Should he make an appearance, he will become the 82nd Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL.
Galvin, 27, originally signed a professional tryout with the Griffins on Oct. 3, 2006. He has contributed three assists and a plus-four rating in eight games with the club.
