GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the Grand Rapids Griffins and recalled goaltender Jonas Gustavsson from his conditioning loan with the Griffins. In addition, the Red Wings assigned goaltender Tom McCollum to Grand Rapids.

A native of Bayonne, France, Ouellet has split his second professional season between Grand Rapids and Detroit. The 21-year-old has scored two goals and an assist in 21 games with the Wings this season, tallying his first NHL point (assist) on Nov. 22 at Toronto and his first NHL goal on Nov. 28 at New Jersey. In 24 games with the Griffins, Ouellet has put up eight points (1-7—8) and 18 PIM. The 6-foot, 200-pound defenseman was Detroit’s second choice (48th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Gustavsson, 30, was assigned to the Griffins last Saturday for a conditioning stint and turned away 29 of 32 shots in the team’s 4-0 loss to the Milwaukee Admirals that night. Gustavsson also started in Grand Rapids’ 3-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday, earning first-star honors behind a 30-save performance. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound goaltender previously appeared with the Griffins on a conditioning stint during the 2012-13 season, when he turned away 26 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers on Feb. 17, 2013.

A native of Danderyd, Sweden, Gustavsson has been recovering from a shoulder injury that occurred with the Wings in an overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 5. He has made just three appearances with the Wings this season, turning out a 1-1-1 record, a 2.30 goals against average, a 0.908 save percentage and one shutout. In 144 career NHL games, Gustavsson owns a 2.89 GAA alongside a 58-53-21 record and a 0.901 save percentage.

Detroit’s first choice (30th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, McCollum has appeared in two games with the Wings this season, producing a 0.91 GAA and a 0.960 save percentage. On Jan. 18 versus Buffalo, McCollum earned his first NHL victory with seven saves in a relief effort, and he also blocked all 17 shots he faced in a third-period relief effort at Tampa Bay on Jan. 29. A native of Cambria, N.Y., McCollum has appeared in 21 games with the Griffins this season, owning a 10-8-3 record alongside a 2.33 GAA and a 0.911 save percentage.
