As the official medical provider for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the experienced doctors at Metro Health Sports Medicine not only treat injuries during a game, they manage the health of the players throughout the season. It’s the same approach they’ve used with local athletes of all ages for more than 15 years, as the area leaders in sports medicine care. They offer truly professional level care, emphasizing expedited diagnosis and treatment plans.

Whether you’ve been injured playing your favorite sport, have chronic aches and pains because of your activities, or have general health issues common to athletes and active individuals, the unique perspective and training of a sports medicine physician can make all the difference. At Metro Health, the sports medicine specialists are also primary care physicians, so they approach an athletic injury in the context of a patient’s entire health history and needs. They also coordinate care with orthopedic surgeons who are fellowship trained in sports medicine and highly skilled physical therapists with the latest tools and techniques to speed your recovery.

“The people providing care at Metro Health Sports Medicine are not only specially trained to work with athletes, they are athletes themselves,” says Metro Health sports medicine director Dr. Ed Kornoelje. “We understand the drive to want to stay at the top of your game, so we do all we can to get you in quickly and address your individual concerns. Our services are really about wellness and getting you back to doing what you enjoy.”

Metro Health Sports Medicine has been proud to work with the Griffins since the team’s first season in 1996. It is also the official medical provider for the Fifth Third River Bank Run, Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon, Reeds Lake Run, Meijer State Games, GVSU, Davenport University, Calvin College, Aquinas College as well as numerous other high school teams and sporting events.

Metro Health Sports Medicine physicians are based at the Metro Health Sports Medicine Center in the Spartan Stores YMCA in Metro Health Village, where they offer Saturday morning hours during the fall athletic season. They also see patients Metro Health’s neighborhood physician offices in Allendale, Caledonia, Cascade, and Hudsonville. You can reach them at (616) 252-7778.
