GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from the Grand Rapids Griffins, who in turn signed goalie Riley Gill to a professional tryout.

MacDonald, 31, just returned to the Griffins on Monday following a six-week stint in Detroit, where he shows a 3-4-1 record and leads the Red Wings’ netminders in goals against average (2.48) and save percentage (0.912) through 10 appearances this season. Meanwhile, in 20 games with Grand Rapids, he has a 10-9-1 record with one shutout, a team-leading 2.78 GAA and a 0.894 save percentage.

MacDonald will serve as Jimmy Howard’s backup tonight when the Red Wings host the Washington Capitals at 7:30 p.m.

Gill, 26, has spent the majority of his rookie season with the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings following a trade from Victoria, where he earned ECHL Goaltender of the Month honors for October. He sports a 10-7-2 record with a 3.27 GAA and a 0.901 save percentage in 19 ECHL appearances, while also totaling three AHL games with Bridgeport and Worcester, posting a 6.68 GAA and a 0.818 save percentage without a decision.

A four-year standout at Western Michigan University from 2006-10, Gill ranks among the Broncos’ all-time leaders with eight shutouts (1st), a 2.94 GAA (2nd) and a 0.915 save percentage (1st). As a senior last season, the Northfield, Minn., native set a single-season school record with a 0.923 save percentage.

Gill will serve as Jordan Pearce’s understudy tonight when the Griffins start a five-game homestand and an unprecedented four games in five nights at Van Andel Arena with a 7 p.m. clash against the Oklahoma City Barons.
