JANIK RECALLED, AXELSSON SUSPENDED
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday recalled defenseman Doug Janik from the Grand Rapids Griffins, who announced that left wing Dick Axelsson has been suspended for leaving the team.
Janik, 29, heeds Hockeytown’s call for the second time this season, after logging 13:56 of ice time and making his Red Wings debut in Detroit’s 2-0 win over Boston on Nov. 3. He leads all Griffins defensemen with three goals (tied), 12 assists (tied) and 15 points through 27 games, while ranking third overall on the club with a plus-10 rating (tied) and 38 penalty minutes.
Axelsson, 22, was Detroit’s third choice (62nd overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The Stockholm, Sweden, native recorded two goals, five points, six PIM and a plus-one rating in 17 games with the Griffins during his North American debut.
