GRIFFINS AND TOLEDO SWAP DEFENSEMEN
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings have reassigned defenseman Richard Nedomlel from the Grand Rapids Griffins to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, while the Griffins have recalled defenseman Derek Docken from Toledo.
Playing in his first full professional season, Docken, 25, has appeared in eight games with the Walleye, registering a plus-one rating. Following a four-year collegiate career at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (2011-15) where he accumulated 24 points (6-18 – 24) and 63 PIM, Docken was signed to an amateur tryout by the Springfield Falcons on March 12, 2015. The 5-foot-11, 203-pound Docken registered one goal in six games with the Falcons toward the conclusion of the 2014-15 AHL regular season.
Prior to his college career, Docken logged 59 games with the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints during the 2010-11 season and picked up 11 points (1-10—11), 41 PIM and a plus-23 rating. He also recorded one assist in 11 playoff games with the Fighting Saints en route to capturing the 2011 Clark Cup.
Nedomlel, 22, did not log any ice time since joining Grand Rapids on Nov. 9. In nine games with Toledo this season, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound defenseman has registered two points (0-2 – 2) and 14 PIM. Detroit’s eighth choice (175th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Nedomlel spent his second professional season with Toledo in 2014-15 and registered 14 points (3-11 – 14), 56 PIM and a plus-six rating in 49 regular season games. The Prague, Czech Republic, native also tallied two assists and 10 PIM in 12 games during the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs, helping the Walleye advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Nedomlel has appeared in three career AHL games, all with the Griffins during the 2013-14 campaign.
In the midst of a six-game winning streak, the Griffins return to action at Van Andel Arena for a pair of upcoming weekend contests, hosting Chicago on Friday, Dec. 4 and Lake Erie on Saturday, Dec. 5.
