GONE CAMPING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Twenty-seven players with Grand Rapids Griffins playing experience will be among the dozens of Detroit Red Wings stars, prospects and invitees who will take to the ice this Sunday, Sept. 13 for the start of Red Wings training camp at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich.
Twenty players who skated for the Griffins’ 2008-09 squad are expected to be on hand for the start of Red Wings camp, including goaltenders Jimmy Howard, Daniel Larsson and Jordan Pearce; defensemen Jonathan Ericsson, Jakub Kindl, Sergei Kolosov, Brian Lashoff and Logan Pyett; and forwards Justin Abdelkader, Cory Emmerton, Darren Helm, Ville Leino, Francis Lemieux, Evan McGrath, Jan Mursak, Ryan Oulahen, Francis Pare, Brent Raedeke, Mattias Ritola and Jamie Tardif.
Also participating in camp will be seven other former Griffins – Valtteri Filppula, Niklas Kronwall, Brett Lebda, Derek Meech, Chris Osgood, Johan Ryno and Jason Williams – and a host of players who could spend time with Grand Rapids this season, including goaltender Thomas McCollum; defensemen Andy Delmore, Travis Ehrhardt, Doug Janik and Sebastien Piche; and forwards Dick Axelsson, Kris Newbury, John Vigilante and Jeremy Williams.
Griffins head coach Curt Fraser and assistant coach Jim Paek will assist the Red Wings’ coaching staff during the camp, which concludes next Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The camp schedule for Sunday calls for three player groups to practice separately at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:05 p.m., with two of those groups scrimmaging at 11:45 a.m. Monday’s schedule will feature practices at 3:10 p.m., 5:10 p.m. and 7:25 p.m. with a 6 p.m. scrimmage, and camp will conclude Tuesday with 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. practices, followed by a 6 p.m. gold medal game. The Red Wings will then play the first of their nine preseason games on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Detroit against Philadelphia.
For the third consecutive year the Griffins will conduct their own training camp at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena. The Griffins’ camp will take place from Wednesday, Sept. 23 to Saturday, Sept. 26, with practice times to be announced in the coming days.
After opening the 2009-10 American Hockey League regular season on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Peoria and playing their first five games on the road, the Griffins will make their Van Andel Arena debut on Friday, Oct. 23 against the Abbotsford Heat at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit griffinshockey.com or call the Griffins at (616) 774-4585.
