GAINING SOME GROUND

Mar 14, 2010

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Ole-Kristian Tollefsen’s first goal as a Griffin came in timely fashion on Sunday, as his blast from 55 feet at 10:52 of the third period was the game-winning tally in a 3-2 win over the Rochester Americans at the Blue Cross Arena.

The Griffins are 2-0-0-1 standing at the halfway mark of a season-high six-game road trip and they have collected points in six of their last seven games (3-1-1-2).

Grand Rapids (28-34-3-3) will travel to Manitoba on Friday for an 8:30 p.m. face off with the Moose at the MTS center.

The Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:46 of the opening period when they scored their second shorthanded goal in as many games. A quick break out of the defensive zone created a two-on-one rush that saw Brad May feed Patrick Rissmiller with a one-time shot from the hash mark. On the goal, Rissmiller became the 41st different Griffin in franchise history to score 20 goals in a season.

Rochester (38-28-2-0) answered before the period expired, as Victor Oreskovich took a pass from David Brine off a face off and tucked a backhand shot inside the left goalpost at 17:33.

Shortly after Grand Rapids denied Rochester of even a shot during their five-on-three power play, the Amerks took a 2-1 lead when Michael Caruso’s shot from the top of the circles found the back of the net at 16:50 of the middle frame.

Grand Rapids used a power play to even the score with just 50 seconds remaining in the period. Jakub Kindl rifled a shot from the right point and after Jamie Tardif’s rebound was also blocked, Justin Abdelkader slammed home a third attempt to close out the period.

After Tollefsen netted his rocket, the Griffins stood strong defensively, including the waning seconds of regulation when the Amerks pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker.

Daniel Larsson made 28 saves in the win for Grand Rapids, while Alexander Salak stopped 20 in the Amerks’ loss.

Three Stars: 1. GR Abdelkader (1 goal, 1 assist); 2. RCH Oreskovich (1 goal); 3. GR Tollefsen (GW goal).
