DETROIT SWAPS DELMORE FOR ARMSTRONG
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday acquired right wing Riley Armstrong from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman Andy Delmore.
Armstrong, 25, has appeared in 38 AHL contests with the Abbotsford Heat this season, posting 19 points (11-8—19) and 55 penalty minutes while ranking fifth on the team with 11 goals and three power play tallies (tied).
A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Armstrong signed with the Flames as a free agent on July 2, 2009, after spending his first five professional seasons in the San Jose organization. In 2008-09, he made his NHL debut in two games with the Sharks and enjoyed a breakout season with AHL Worcester, setting career highs with 25 goals and 42 points in 71 appearances.
Armstrong, a teammate of current Griffin Patrick Rissmiller with the Cleveland Barons during his first two pro seasons (2004-06), has totaled 159 points (82-77—159) and 539 PIM in 380 AHL contests.
Assigned to Grand Rapids following the trade, Armstrong is expected to make his Griffins debut on Friday when they host the Manitoba Moose at 7 p.m.
Delmore, 33, has played 54 games with the Griffins during his 13th pro campaign, contributing 20 points (5-15—20) and 32 PIM. A veteran of 283 games in the NHL, he played the last two seasons in Hamburg, Germany, before signing with the Red Wings on July 28, 2009.
