GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday assigned defenseman Xavier Ouellet to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Ouellet, 20, made his NHL debut with Detroit during the team’s 1-0 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, becoming the 134th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman, who had 23 shifts and a total ice time of 17:15 with Detroit in Monday's game, has also posted two points (0-2—2) in five games with Grand Rapids this season.

Prior to joining the Griffins, the rookie defenseman was a part of the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, tallying 101 points (31-70—101) from 2011-13. Ouellet also represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, posting three points (1-2—3) in six games. Drafted by Detroit in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Ouellet served as a “black ace” with Grand Rapids for the first three rounds of the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Griffins (2-1-1-1) will host the Charlotte Checkers tomorrow at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to take on the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT and the Iowa Wild on Sunday at 6:05 p.m EDT.
