GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the Grand Rapids Griffins. In addition, the Griffins recalled defenseman Scott Czarnowczan from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.
A native of Bayonne, France, Ouellet ties for second in scoring among Griffins blueliners with seven points (1-6—7) in 18 games this season. The 6-foot, 200-pound defenseman has also skated in five games with Detroit this season, scoring his first NHL point (assist) on Nov. 22 at Toronto and his first NHL goal on Nov. 28 at New Jersey. In 88 career games with the Griffins, the 21-year-old Ouellet has accumulated 24 points (5-19—24), 34 penalty minutes and a plus-six rating. Ouellet was Detroit’s second choice (48th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Czarnowczan, 23, made his AHL debut with the Griffins on Nov. 21 at Lake Erie and finished the game with a plus-one rating. In 15 games with the Walleye this season, Czarnowczan ranks first among defensemen with 14 points (1-13—14), four PIM and a plus-five rating. After making his professional debut and tallying a goal and assist in two games with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads last season, the former Ferris State Bulldog was signed to a Griffins contract on July 4.
After dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Lake Erie Monsters at Van Andel Arena on Wednesday, the Griffins will take on the Oklahoma City Barons at Cox Convention Center on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. EST.
