CONKLIN ASSIGNED TO GRAND RAPIDS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday assigned veteran NHL goaltender Ty Conklin to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Conklin, 35, has appeared in 11 games for the Red Wings this season, posting a 3-5-0 record with a 3.40 goals against average and a 0.878 save percentage, highlighted by a 29-save shutout of Colorado on Oct. 8. He has totaled 211 NHL contests in his 11-year career, showing a 94-66-20 record with a 2.68 GAA and a 0.906 save percentage.
Only two goaltenders have had more NHL experience than Conklin before joining the Griffins: Curtis Joseph (767) and Chris Osgood (568), both of whom played in Grand Rapids on conditioning stints. Conklin has been with three teams that reached the Stanley Cup Finals – Edmonton (2005-06), Pittsburgh (2007-08) and Detroit (2008-09) – and has also played with Columbus, Buffalo and St. Louis.
A native of Eagle River, Alaska, Conklin has made AHL stops in Hamilton, Hartford, Syracuse and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, most recently logging 18 games for the baby Pens in 2007-08 with an 11-7-0 record and a 2.21 GAA. In 117 career AHL contests, he sports a 48-46-15 record, a 2.65 GAA and seven shutouts.
Conklin’s only full AHL season came in 2002-03, when he and the Bulldogs fell one win shy of capturing the Calder Cup, losing in seven games to Houston. His 83-save performance in Game 2 of that series – a 2-1 Hamilton win in four overtimes – stood as the AHL record for most saves in a game until Albany’s Michael Leighton made 98 stops in a 3-2 five-overtime loss to Philadelphia on April 24, 2008.
Conklin joined the Griffins for practice today, as the team prepares for the first of four straight games against North Division opponents. After hosting Hamilton on Wednesday at 7 p.m., Grand Rapids will play back-to-back games this weekend, hosting Lake Erie on Friday at 7 p.m. before visiting Toronto on Saturday at 5 p.m. Tickets for the Griffins’ two home games this week are available at griffinshockey.com.
