CALLAHAN RECALLED, NICASTRO AND McNULTY JOIN
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Monday recalled left wing Mitch Callahan from the Grand Rapids Griffins and reassigned defenseman Max Nicastro from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye to their AHL affiliate. In addition, the Griffins signed defenseman Marc McNulty to an amateur tryout.
Callahan, 22, ranks third on the Griffins in scoring with 40 points (25-15—40) and 51 penalty minutes in 66 games this season. Detroit’s sixth choice (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Callahan has spent the last three seasons with Grand Rapids, netting 69 points (42-27—69) and 196 PIM in 185 career AHL games. In his current campaign, the Whittier, Calif., native has shattered his combined point total from his previous two seasons (17-12—29) and leads the team in shots (185) and plus/minus (21) while ranking second in goals (25).
The Wings will visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., when Callahan could make his NHL debut and become the 144th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL.
Nicastro, 24, has skated in 58 games with the Walleye this season, garnering 16 points (0-16—16) and 28 PIM. A native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Nicastro appeared in 25 games with Grand Rapids last season, posting three points (1-2—3) and 10 PIM. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound defenseman was Detroit’s third choice (91st overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
McNulty, 18, recently wrapped up his third season with the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, notching 42 points (17-25—42) and 115 PIM in 67 games. From 2011-14, the 6-foot-6, 193-pound defenseman earned 57 points (25-32—57) in 140 career games with the Cougars. McNulty was Detroit’s sixth choice (169th overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
The Griffins will hit the road to face the Rockford IceHogs at BMO Harris Bank Center on Friday at 8 p.m. EDT, before returning home to Van Andel Arena for a rematch against the IceHogs on Saturday at 7 p.m. Grand Rapids’ three-in-three will conclude with a road game against the Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT.
