CALLAHAN ASSIGNED TO GRAND RAPIDS

Mar 26, 2014

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday assigned left wing Mitch Callahan to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

A native of Whittier, Calif., Callahan was Detroit’s sixth choice (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 22-year-old ranks third on the Griffins in scoring with 40 points (25-15—40) and 51 penalty minutes in 66 games this season. In three seasons with Grand Rapids, the 6-foot, 195-pound winger has garnered 69 points (42-27—69) and 247 PIM in 185 career AHL games. In his current campaign, Callahan has shattered his combined point total from his previous two seasons (17-12—29) and leads the team in shots (185) and plus/minus (21) while ranking second in goals (25).

Callahan made his NHL debut with Detroit last night in a 4-2 road loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the 144th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL.

The Griffins will hit the road to face the Rockford IceHogs at BMO Harris Bank Center on Friday at 8 p.m. EDT, before returning home to Van Andel Arena for a rematch against the IceHogs on Saturday at 7 p.m. Grand Rapids’ three-in-three will conclude with a road game against the Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT.
