GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Thirty-six players with Grand Rapids Griffins playing experience will be among the 61 Detroit Red Wings stars, prospects and invitees who will take to the ice on Thursday, Sept. 12 for the start of Red Wings training camp at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich.
Twenty-eight players who skated for the Griffins during their 2012-13 Calder Cup championship season are expected to be on hand, including goaltenders Jonas Gustavsson, Tom McCollum and Petr Mrazek; defensemen Adam Almquist, Brennan Evans, Gleason Fournier, Danny DeKeyser, Brian Lashoff, Max Nicastro, Nathan Paetsch, Brendan Smith and Ryan Sproul; and forwards Joakim Andersson, Louis-Marc Aubry, Mitch Callahan, Willie Coetzee, Landon Ferraro, Luke Glendening, Triston Grant, Jeff Hoggan, Calle Jarnkrok, Tomas Jurco, Andrej Nestrasil, Gustav Nyquist, Trevor Parkes, Teemu Pulkkinen, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar.
Also present at camp will be eight other former Griffins – Justin Abdelkader, Cory Emmerton, Jonathan Ericsson, Darren Helm, Jimmy Howard, Jakub Kindl, Niklas Kronwall and Kyle Quincey – and several players who could make their Grand Rapids debuts this season, including goaltender Jared Coreau; defensemen Nick Jensen, Alexey Marchenko, Richard Nedomlel and Xavier Ouellet; and forwards Martin Frk, Kevin Lynch, David McIntyre and Marek Tvrdon.
Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill and assistant coaches Jim Paek and Spiros Anastas will assist the Red Wings’ coaching staff during the camp, which concludes next Tuesday, Sept. 17. The three recently coached the Red Wings' youngest prospects to the franchise's first-ever championship in the annual NHL Prospects Tournament that it hosts.
The camp schedule for Thursday through Saturday will see three player groups hitting the ice at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:05 p.m., with two of those groups scrimmaging from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday will feature a Red vs. White Game at 11 a.m.
The Red Wings will play two of their eight preseason games before breaking camp, visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. EDT. The players participating in each game will have a morning skate in Traverse City prior to departure, while the non-traveling players will practice from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

The Griffins will commence their own training camp in Grand Rapids on Monday, Sept. 23, with practice times and locations yet to be announced, before playing a pair of neutral-site preseason games against the Lake Erie Monsters. Grand Rapids will first battle the Monsters on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at Compuware Arena in Plymouth, Mich., home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers, before squaring off again on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7:05 p.m. at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, home to the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
The 2013 Calder Cup champions will commence the AHL’s regular season and begin defense of their title on Fri. Oct. 4 in Rochester, the first of three straight road games to start the season. The Griffins will then raise their championship banner prior to hosting the Milwaukee Admirals on Fri., Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Arena.
