Griffins Sign Loggins to Three-Year Contract, Pearson to ATO

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday signed left wing Troy Loggins to a three-year contract that will last through the 2020-21 season and signed center Chase Pearson to an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. The Detroit Red Wings signed Pearson on Monday to a two-year entry-level contract that will commence next season.

Loggins, 23, recently concluded a four-year career at Northern Michigan University where he totaled 106 points (56-50—106), a plus-nine rating and 149 penalty minutes in 136 games from 2015-19 and was a two-time First Team All-WCHA selection in 2017-18 and 2018-19. As a senior, the 5-foot-11, 168-pound winger was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Year after recording 40 points (23-17—40), a plus-nine rating and 46 PIM in 39 games. He ranked among the country’s leaders with 23 goals (T2nd), 10 power play goals (T1st), three shorthanded goals (T1st) and 155 shots on goal (1st). Loggins took home the league’s scoring title with 32 points on a WCHA-high 20 goals and 12 assists in 28 league games. He was also a two-time WCHA Forward of the Week honoree this season.

As a junior, Loggins tied for ninth nationally with 23 goals among 47 points in 43 games while leading the country with 186 shots.

A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Loggins suited up for the United States Hockey League’s Sioux Falls Stampede in 2014-15 prior to joining the college ranks, and he was named the MVP of the Clark Cup Playoffs after helping the club win the title behind a league-best 16 points (10-6—16) in 12 games. During the regular season, he tallied 35 points (14-21—35) and 97 PIM in 57 appearances.

Loggins was named to the NAHL’s All-Rookie Second Team in 2013-14 with the Wenatchee Wild after tying for eighth overall in the league with 53 points (23-30—53) in 60 games.

A fifth-round selection, 140th overall, by Detroit in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Pearson played the last three seasons at the University of Maine and accumulated 78 points (37-41—78), a plus-18 rating and 132 PIM in 107 games. He served as captain during his sophomore and junior campaigns. During the 2018-19 season, the 21-year-old posted collegiate career highs in goals (16) and points (29) and ranked among the Black Bears’ leaders with 16 goals (1st), 29 points (2nd), 13 assists (3rd), a plus-21 rating (1st), five power play goals (1st), 99 shots on goal (2nd). Pearson totaled 20 points (10-10—20) in 22 games during conference play, ranking 14th in Hockey East in points and tying for fifth in goals.


In 2017-18, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound center finished second on the team in points with 27 (7-20—27) in 37 games and was named a Hockey East All-Star Honorable Mention in addition to receiving All-Academic Team accolades.

Prior to college, Pearson played two full seasons for the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League and amassed 76 points (24-52—76), a plus-42 rating and 157 PIM in 114 games from 2013-16. A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Pearson represented the United States at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge and tied for second on the team with six points (2-4—6) in five games.

Chase’s father, Scott Pearson, appeared in 292 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders during a professional career that spanned from 1988-00.

Now 2-0 on their season-high six-game road trip, the Griffins face the Texas Stars tonight at 8 p.m. EDT.
