GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Monday assigned goaltender Joey MacDonald to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
MacDonald, 33, is the Griffins’ franchise leader in games played by a goaltender (210), minutes (11,784:31), wins (109), shutouts (20) and saves (5,362). He also ranks among the all-time top 10 with a 2.44 goals against average (6th), a 0.918 save percentage (T5th) and 11 shootout wins (T2nd). MacDonald owns a career 190-77-11 record over his seven prior seasons with the Griffins (2002-07, 2010-12).
The Pictou, Nova Scotia, native split the 2011-12 season between Grand Rapids and Detroit, showing an 11-11-3 record with a 2.63 goals against average and three shutouts in 26 appearances with the Griffins and an 8-5-1 record with a 2.16 GAA in 14 games with the Red Wings. He helped Detroit break the NHL’s single-season mark of 20 straight home wins by recording the the last six wins of a 23-game run from Feb. 8-19, 2012.
In 101 career NHL games with Detroit, Boston, the New York Islanders and Toronto, the 12th-year pro sports a 31-48-13 record with a 3.04 GAA and two shutouts. The 6-foot, 197-pound netminder also has a 139-114-16 record with a 2.60 GAA and 24 shutouts (which ties for 9th in league history) in 284 AHL games between Grand Rapids, Bridgeport and Toronto.
MacDonald rejoins the Griffins as they prepare to play four of their next five games on home ice. Grand Rapids will host Lake Erie on Friday at 7 p.m. and Charlotte on Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at griffinshockey.com.
