SWEPT AWAY
PEORIA, Ill. – The Grand Rapids Griffins two-game road winning steak was snapped Saturday night as they fell to the Peoria Rivermen 4-2 at Carver Arena.
The Rivermen opened the scoring in the first period on the power play as Trent Whitfield slid a shot in between the legs of Stefan Liv at the 8:23 mark. The Griffins quickly answered, with a power play goal of their own, as Jonathan Ericsson pounded in a shot off a beautiful set up by Kip Miller at 10:26.
Peoria retook the lead later in the period, when leading goal scorer, Charles Linglet snuck behind the Grand Rapids’ defense and beat Liv for his 14th goal of the season.
Scott Barney tallied the only goal of a defensively dominated second period, tying the score up 2-2 at the 3:29 mark. Barney took a pass from Jeff Campbell, quickly pushed it around the net, and shot it past a surprised Marek Schwarz to draw the Griffins even.
A hard fought third period saw the Rivermen retake their third lead of the game at the 8:14 mark when Peter Sejna set up Mike Glumac for the eventual game winning tally. For Sejna it was his fifth assist in just two games against the Griffins this season.
Peoria added a empty net goal at 19:56 to hand the Griffins their second loss in as many days.
The Griffins now travel to Milwaukee tomorrow where they are set to take on the Admirals for the third time in five days, with game time set for 6 p.m. EST. Grand Rapids looks to draw even in the season series against Milwaukee, which has handed the Griffins losses of 8-1 and 6-3 already this season.
