HEDDEN SIGNED, MacDONALD RECALLED
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from the Grand Rapids Griffins, who today signed forward Mike Hedden to a professional tryout.
MacDonald, 31, returned to the Griffins just last night after spending most of the previous two months in Detroit. He owns a 4-4-2 record with one shutout and leads the Red Wings’ netminders in goals against average (2.10) and save percentage (0.926) through 12 NHL appearances this season, while showing a 10-9-1 record with one shutout, a 2.78 GAA and a 0.894 save percentage in 20 games with Grand Rapids.
MacDonald, who has turned aside 47 shots during his current shutout streak of 94:04 as a Red Wing, will back up Jimmy Howard tonight when Detroit hosts the NHL-leading Vancouver Canucks at 7:30 p.m.
Hedden, 26, joins the Griffins for the second time this season, having gone scoreless during his AHL debut with Grand Rapids on Jan. 22 in a 5-3 loss to Chicago. The Dunnville, Ontario, native and second-year pro currently leads ECHL Toledo and ties for sixth in the league with 29 goals, while also tying for second on the Walleye with 45 points.
Hedden is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Griffins host the Toronto Marlies at 7 p.m.
