Fri., Oct. 31 Chicago Wolves 6 at GRIFFINS 5 OT 3-3-1-0, 7 pts. (5th)
Grave Results: Last Wednesday, Mitch Callahan scored 10 seconds into the Griffins’ home game against the Rockford IceHogs, but goaltender Mike Leighton bounced back with a 38-save performance to backstop the ‘Hogs to a 2-1 victory. Matt Carey notched the visitors’ first goal, while Joakim Nordstrom scored off a defensive-zone turnover by the Griffins with less than two minutes remaining to steal the win. On Friday, Sebastian Wannstrom knocked home a rebound during a power play 1:56 into overtime to lift the Chicago Wolves to a wild 6-5 victory over the Griffins at Van Andel Arena. The Griffins sprinted out to an early 3-0 advantage by lighting the lamp on their first three shots against Matt Climie, but the Wolves clawed back to take a 4-3 lead and, eventually, the win. Andy Miele scored twice within the opening 5:53 and Andreas Athanasiou maintained the Griffins’ perfect shooting percentage with 6:03 left in the frame. Chicago got on the board at the 16:51 mark on a goal similar to Miele’s first, with Shane Harper deflecting Terry Broadhurst’s feed past Petr Mrazek from the doorstep. The Wolves then scored three times in less than five minutes to seize a shocking 4-3 lead and chase Mrazek from the game in favor of Tom McCollum. Unperturbed, Martin Frk took advantage of a misplay by Climie to knot the score at the 10:52 mark. McRae’s second goal of the night, on a redirection at 17:16, put Chicago ahead 5-4 and represented a rare power play goal for the opposition, as the Griffins to that point had killed off all 14 opponent power plays at home this season and 27 of 28 overall. Landon Ferraro netted the equalizer with his first goal of the season 8:14 into the third, but an offensive-zone boarding penalty on Callahan with one second remaining in regulation put Chicago on a 4-on-3 power play to begin the Griffins’ first foray into the AHL’s new seven-minute overtime period, setting the stage for Wannstrom’s overtime winner. The Griffins are still looking for their first home win, owning a 0-3-1-0 record at Van Andel Arena and a 3-3-1-0 record overall.
Three-Goal Slip: Before Friday’s 6-5 loss to the Chicago Wolves, only twice during Jeff Blashill’s tenure as head coach (2012-present) had the Griffins lost a regular season or playoff game in which they held a three-goal lead: Jan. 26, 2014 at San Antonio (led 5-2 in a 5-6 OTL) and Oct. 26, 2012 vs. Charlotte (led 4-1 in a 4-6 L).
Winning Wednesday: Wednesday’s matinee game against the Chicago Wolves is an Amway Winning Wednesday. Every time the Griffins win at home on Wednesday, each fan in attendance will receive a free ticket to the next Wednesday game. Additionally, the first 300 fans to visit the Amway table in Section A will receive a gift. Fans can also enjoy a buy-one, get-one-free deal on a 16 oz. Pepsi all game long at any concession stand that sells fountain drinks. (Winning Wednesday and BOGO Pepsi offers exclude Dec. 31 game.)
Matinee Game: The annual matinee game returns on Wednesday for its 14th consecutive year. The Griffins’ annual matinee game has become a major educational event for West Michigan schools. Approximately 3,000 students and teachers will arrive at 9 a.m. to take part in many unique learning experiences prior to the game’s start time of 11 a.m. This season, the Griffins have partnered with local organizations such as the West Michigan Optometric Association and the West Michigan District Dental Society to provide a variety of “Health & Wellness” educational displays and exhibits for students and teachers. The matinee game experience will also include the Griffins High School Symposium, which will assist students in developing their career interests and preparing for an academic life beyond high school. The Griffins have teamed up with Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Northwood University, Aquinas College, Western Michigan University and Calvin College to create a fun event that will showcase a wide variety of exciting programs offered within each school’s curriculum. Griffins-contracted defenseman Scott Czarnowczan assisted on Anthony Luciani’s lone tally on Saturday, while Kyle Bonis and Richard Nedomlel each enjoyed goals in Sunday’s contest.
