Good Sports

Just like the fans who cheer them on at Van Andel Arena, Griffins players have their own rooting interests and sports teams they are passionate about. A few of them shared their opinions recently concerning storylines from the wide world of sports.

Red Sox fan Drew MacIntyre, on Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and the AL East arms race:

“I think it’s pretty fun and entertaining for fans to see George Steinbrenner and his enemies go at it all the time. I’m not worried about my Red Sox, though. They signed Matt Clement and Edgar Renteria, (plus) a couple good pitchers. The Yankees do this every year. Who cares? It’s just Steinbrenner spending his money. But Randy’s going to be pretty good. I’m not going to deny that.”

Derek Meech, on the experience of playing for Canada in the 2004 World Junior Championship (Canada won 2005 gold earlier this month in Grand Forks, ND):

“Growing up in Canada you always dream about playing for your country. I remember watching the World Juniors in Winnipeg in 1999 and wishing I could be there one day. Finally one summer it came true, and I went over to Finland to play (last year). Unfortunately we came up short with the silver against the United States, but it was still a big achievement. Not many guys can say they have a silver medal from the World Juniors. It’s huge. You’re matched up against the best in the world, and it’s a good measuring stick to see where you fit in among guys from different leagues.”

Vikings fan Travis Richards, on the recent antics of wide receiver Randy Moss:

“I thought walking off the field (before the Redskins game was over) was a big deal. He shouldn’t have done that. The mooning thing (versus the Packers), we obviously played that day, so I didn’t get to see it (live). When I finally saw it, I couldn’t believe it – I thought it was (overblown). But his reputation makes it a big deal. Because it’s him, and he’s had so many unstable actions in the past, he took a lot of heat for it.”

Ernie Hartlieb, on the playoff chances of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and fellow Redhawks alum Ben Roethlisberger:

“When I was a senior he was a freshman, so I really didn’t know him. But I have to stick with my Miami of Ohio guys. I’ve got him picked to win the whole thing.”
