TRAINING CAMP UPDATE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Griffins trimmed nine players from their training camp roster on Saturday, assigning forward Mike Walsh to the ECHL's Toledo Storm and releasing defensemen Paul Crosty and Andy Zulyniak, and forwards Mike Berry, Tyson Gimblett, Brandon Kaleniecki, Evan Kotsopoulos, Andrew Martin and Jamie Tardif.

Twenty-three players remain in camp, as the Griffins prepare for their regular season opener this Friday, Oct. 6 at San Antonio. Several additional players will be assigned to Grand Rapids by the Red Wings following the conclusion of Detroit's preseason schedule on Sunday.

September 27, 2006 - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The real Griffins team began to take shape on Wednesday, with the arrival of Darryl Bootland and the first on-ice appearances by Brendan Brooks, Evan McGrath and Derek Meech.

Brooks dominated the afternoon scrimmage by scoring a hat trick for Team White, which claimed an 8-7 win on Ryan Keller's goal in the final seconds. Bootland led the way for Team Blue with two lamp-lighters.

Ryan Oulahen and Brett Angel did not participate again today, but Oulahen did some running on his own and appears close to returning.

The Griffins made their first camp cuts after the scrimmage, releasing defenseman Iain McPhee and forwards Cam Abbott, Chris Abbott, Jason Beeman and Elias Godoy.

September 26, 2006 - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Eric Himelfarb and Stefan Liv both took part in Tuesday's scrimmage, with fellow Red Wings assignees Brendan Brooks, Matt Ellis, Evan McGrath and Dan Smith due in later this week.

Team Blue avenged Monday's loss with a 7-3 win over Team White, with goalies Liv, Logan Koopmans and Dominic Vicari splitting time between the two squads. Liv, who had a pair of gold medals draped around his neck last spring, looked particularly impressive.

Lucas Lawson and rookie Andrew Martin led the way with two goals apiece for Team Blue, which also got goals from Kip Miller and Ryan Keller. Himelfarb scored one of Team White's three tallies.

Brett Angel, Derek Meech and Ryan Oulahen remained sidelined with various lower-body injures.

September 25, 2006 - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Most of the 2006-07 Grand Rapids Griffins may still be in training camp with the Detroit Red Wings, but fans still got their first glimpse of the team on Monday at Griff's IceHouse at Belknap Park.

Griffins-contracted players Kip Miller, Ryan Keller and Mike Walsh led nearly 30 players onto the ice for a morning practice and afternoon scrimmage. Team White's 8-5 win over Team Blue was sparked by two goals by Jamie Tardif and another by Brock Radunske, one of the first two Edmonton Oilers prospects (Stephane Goulet) to be assigned to Grand Rapids under the new partial affiliation.

Logan Koopmans suffered the loss, while Michigan State product Dominic Vicari got the win. As coaches Greg Ireland and Jim Paek watched the scrimmage from the stands, the benches were under the direction of former Griffins Travis Richards (White) and Bruce Ramsay (Blue), now the coach of the UHL's Muskegon Fury.

Returning Griffins Ryan Oulahen and Derek Meech sat out today's action while recovering from lower-body injuries suffered during Red Wings camp. Defenseman Brett Angel took a hard hit along the boards during the scrimmage and had to be helped off the ice due to an apparent knee injury. He left the arena on his own power to be evaluated by team doctors.

Camp continues Tuesday and Wednesday with an identical schedule of a 9-10:30 a.m. practice followed by a 2:30 p.m. scrimmage. Tonight, additional players are expected to be assigned to the Griffins by the Red Wings.
