GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 1 at Chicago Wolves 3

Dec. 11, 2011

ROSEMONT, Ill.
– The Grand Rapids Griffins scored late in the third period to force a tense finish but ultimately lost 3-1 to the Chicago Wolves Sunday afternoon at Allstate Arena.

Goaltending duo Matt Climie and Eddie Lack combined to hand Chicago the win, with Climie leaving the game late in the second period due to injury. Climie stopped all 12 shots he faced before Lack finished the game, saving 14 of 15 shots to keep the Griffins at bay.

Chicago (11-9-1-3) got goals from Ryan Parent, Mark Mancari and Mike Duco while Tomas Tatar tallied for Grand Rapids. Joey MacDonald saw off 20 of 23 shots for the Griffins in his second game back from a concussion he sustained on Nov. 5.

The Griffins (10-12-1-2), having finished their second three-in-three road trip of the season, will return to Van Andel Arena this Wednesday for their fourth contest of the season with the Rockford IceHogs at 7 p.m. EST.

A shorthanded goal at 4:19 by Parent, his first this season, handed Chicago the early advantage. Later, during a five-on-three power play, the Wolves extended their lead through Mancari’s 10th strike of the year. Chris Tanev’s slap-pass was redirected by Steve Reinprecht to set-up Mancari in the slot and, the Wolves forward buried from close range at 10:44.

After a lengthy dust-up between Brendan Smith and Antoine Roussel, Chicago looked to have scored late in the period. However, Anton Rodin’s effort was waved off due to goaltender interference.

The second stanza centered on Chicago’s goal. As the Griffins battled to get back in the game, Climie came up limping a little over 15 minutes through the period. Lack stepped in to see out the final minutes of the frame, before weathering the Griffins’ third-period push.

Before the Griffins got themselves back in contention, the Wolves added a controversial third at 5:35. In on a breakaway, Mancari let a shot go that knocked MacDonald’s mask off but, before the play could be whistled dead, Mike Duco fired home the loose puck for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Two minutes and 18 seconds of five-on-three hockey midway through the third gave Grand Rapids the perfect opportunity to claw back into the game. Tatar deflected a Logan Pyett blast to get the Griffins on the board at 10:23, but his seventh of the year was all Grand Rapids could muster.

Three Stars: 1. CHI Mancari (goal, assist); 2. CHI Tanev (two assists); 3. GR Tatar (goal)
