GRIFFINS ROADSHOW A SUCCESS

Oct. 24, 2010 - GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 6 at Toronto Marlies 3

TORONTO – The Griffins shut down the Marlies 6-3 on Sunday evening at the Ricoh Coliseum, denying Toronto on 10 of 11 power play opportunities to claim their second road win of the weekend.

Ilari Filppula, Brent Raedeke and Jan Mursak each tallied two goals to account for all six of the Griffins' goals in their victory.

Coming off four straight road wins, Grand Rapids (4-2-0-1) will return to West Michigan for a four-game homestand beginning Friday, Oct. 29, when the team welcomes the Oklahoma City Barons to Van Andel Arena for the first time at 7 p.m.

The Griffins fired off four consecutive goals in the first period. Filppula started the barrage with a power play goal at 2:50 on assists from Francis Pare and Derek Meech, then quickly followed with a second goal at 5:49.

Raedeke responded with two back-to-back goals of his own, the first finding the net at 11:30 when Travis Ehrhardt handed off a pass to Meech, who claimed his second assist of the night. Raedeke tallied his second goal 14:12 on a shorthanded breakaway, giving the Griffins a 4-0 advantage.

Only 22 seconds later Justin Hodgman put the Marlies on the board, slipping a power play goal beyond Thomas McCollum at 14:34, ending the Griffins' perfect road penalty killing streak at 23.

The Griffins expanded their lead to 5-1 at 5:07 of the second with a power play goal from Mursak. The Marlies then battled back at 14:08, as Hodgman notched a backhanded power play goal over McCollum’s shoulder for his second of the night.

Grand Rapids headed into the third period with a three-goal spread at 5-2, before Mursak accumulated his second goal of the night shorthanded into an empty net at 10:01. Darryl Boyce quickly answered for the Marlies (2-3-0-0), scoring his own unassisted shorthanded goal at 14:10 for the last goal of the game.

The Griffins made it the second road win for McCollum, who posted 25 saves. Marlies goaltender Jussi Rynnas totaled 19 saves.

Three Stars: 1. GR Raedeke (2 goals); 2. GR Filppula (2 goals, assist); 3. TOR Hodgman (2 goals)
